Planning the night out
Practical answers for a Longreach dinner night: the season, the pickup, what to wear, diets, access, children, groups, booking terms and getting to Longreach.
Find a riverbank night ↗Quick answer
Check the calendar for a night inside the operator’s April-to-October season, note the pickup time on your confirmation, tell the operator about diets and mobility in advance, and pack a jacket. The coach does the driving and the bar is paid for on the night.
Choosing a night
Dinner nights are scheduled inside the operator’s main season, April to October, when most of the area’s attractions are running. Winter is the peak for local tours and they can fill up before the date, so if your days in Longreach are fixed, book a few days ahead. The booking calendar shows the nights on sale and the pickup times. Pickup times move through the season to suit the light, so go by the time printed on your own confirmation.
The pickup and the coach
Return coach transfers from Longreach accommodation come with the booking; all you do is wait at your lodging when the confirmation says. The coach has a few steps up, and the operator can stow a walker or a pram underneath if you tell them before the day. If you would rather drive to the river yourself and meet the group there, contact the operator before booking, because that is arranged directly with them.
What to wear and bring
Longreach has a hot semi-arid climate: very hot summers and mild winters, with cool nights. The dinner season falls in the cooler months and the whole evening is outdoors under coolibahs on the riverbank, so a jacket or a warm layer is the one thing the operator asks you to bring. Add comfortable shoes and a card or cash for the bar. There is no dress code, and nobody expects more than clean, practical clothes.
Diets, access and children
Gluten-free, vegetarian and children’s meals are available on request, and the operator needs dietary requirements in advance; send them through your booking messages as soon as you book. Wheelchair access is flagged on the booking, there is an accessible bathroom, and food comes to the table, so nobody queues at a counter. The operator prices children aged 4 to 14 separately, and under-fours come along without a meal.
Groups and booking terms
Parties of 15 or more are taken by arrangement with the operator, so contact them first. Smaller groups of friends who book separately can ask to be seated together. On a GetYourGuide booking, cancelling is free until 24 hours before the night, and places can be held now and paid for later. The operator’s own terms for direct bookings differ, so keep any changes inside the booking you actually made.
Pairing it with other evenings
If you are in town for several nights, the dinner pairs well with the area’s other evening trips rather than competing with them. The sunset rail run on a heritage rail motor leaves from Longreach Railway Station, lasts about two hours with a stop for the sunset, and serves canapés, with drinks extra; it is not suitable for wheelchair users. The paddlewheeler dinner adds a cruise and runs about four hours. Spread across separate nights, the three give you the river by boat, the country by rail and the riverbank at a table.
Getting to Longreach
Longreach has an airport, and it is the terminus of the Central Western railway line, served by the Spirit of the Outback train from Brisbane. The Landsborough Highway runs through the town for anyone driving. However you arrive, give yourself at least one full day for the museums and put the dinner on an evening after that day rather than on the night you get in; a coach ride, a meal and a few songs are the right weight for tired legs.
